Among China's well-kept secrets, one caught the imagination
of Americans-Chinese Wushu. Wushu is an important component of the cultural heritage of China, with a rich
content that has remained untarnished over the centuries. Literally translated, WU is military,
SHU is art. Wushu therefore means the Art of fighting or Martial
arts.
Wushu, the official term recognized by
the People's Republic of China, also known in Western terminology as "KUNG-FU", is a relatively
new sport. It was established only in 1959 by the Physical Culture and Sports Commission of China with
the approval of the rules and classification for wushu competition.
Previously, wushu figured significantly
in the simple matter of survival through China's many wars and political upheaval.
Today, wushu has been organized and systematized
into a formal branch of study in the performance arts by Chinese. Its emphasis has shifted from combat to performance, and
it is practiced for its method of achieving health, self-defense skills, mental discipline, recreational pursuit and
competition.
It reigns as the most popular national
sport in the country of 1.1 billion people, practiced by the young and old alike. Wushu as a sport has been a favorite among
the Asian countries. The members of ASIAN WUSHU FEDERATION has made a tremendeous success in the effort to
upgrade the standard of wushu skills. Wushu is already an important part of the Asian sports.
